The Phulara Ridge Trek, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, offers an experience that feels both grounding and transformative. It's the distance you cover and the moments you discover along the way; moments of solitude, quiet beauty, and connection to the natural world around you. As it's said, "If you’re in the Himalayas, there’s no turning back." The trek is more than just a physical journey; it’s a chance to step into a different pace of life. Here, nature and time seem to move at their rhythm.
This trek begins in Sankri, a simple village tucked away in the mountains, where you’ll first feel the rugged yet welcoming spirit of the region. From here, you’ll begin your climb along a narrow ridge that weaves its way through dense forests of oak and rhododendron. The path is quiet, away from the crowds, and gives you a sense of space you might not find elsewhere. As you walk, the air grows cooler, the sounds of the forest become your companions, and the distant snow-capped peaks begin to reveal themselves, offering glimpses of the grandeur that lies ahead.
Phulara Ridge stands apart because of its untouched nature; very few people venture along this route, making it feel like you’ve found a hidden path. The trek isn’t about rushing to the finish line; it’s about taking time to notice the details, the wildflowers that line the trail, the shifting patterns of the sky above, and the deep, quiet moments when it feels like the world slows down.
The trek takes you through some of the most scenic spots in the region. At Bhoj Gadi, you’ll pause to take in the view of the Kedarkantha peak, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. It’s here that the trek invites you to reflect. Stop for a moment and appreciate the simplicity of the landscape around you. The quiet meadows, the steady rhythm of your footsteps, and the crisp mountain air are all reminders that you’re part of something larger than yourself.
As you move towards the Pushtara Meadows, the journey peaks, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The sight of the snow-capped peaks and the rolling meadows below will stay with you long after the trek is over. This final stretch brings the experience full circle. It is a reminder of the stillness and beauty that the Himalayas offer, waiting to be discovered by those who seek them.
The Phulara Ridge Trek is not just a physical challenge, but an opportunity to connect with nature and with yourself. It’s a chance to slow down, to breathe in the crisp air, and to experience the quiet wonder of the Garhwal Himalayas in a way that leaves you changed, without the need for words.
Sankri Altitude: 6,400 ft (1,960 m)
Altitude Gain: 4300 ft (1,311 m)
Travel Distance: 220 km
Travel Hours: 10 hrs
The start of your trekking adventure begins with meeting our travel associates. They join you at Dehradun and get you safely to Sankri (6,400 ft). Among many Himalayan villages, this is a beautiful and must-visit sight. The drive to the base village also has occasional river views. Otherwise, this day is only lightly packed.
Trekkers have to sit back, rest, and zoom into the spirals of the Garhwal hills. Let yourself get carried away by the beauty of hilly roads. Here at once, you are at the base of the hill, and then suddenly at the top of the same hill.
Travel-sick trekkers can relax; they need not talk to anyone to feel accompanied. They have plenty of company in the form of ravishing views of the Yamuna River and the sound of its soothing flow. If strong smells make you nauseous, worry not, the sweet smell of pines will keep your senses balanced.
It's a 10-hour drive to Sankri, approximately 220 km from Dehradun. After Kotgaon, the drive left is as minimal as 3 minutes. Sankri hosts base camps for the Kedarkantha Trek, just like the Phulara Ridge Trek. Sankri is under the Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary, another visit-worthy place in Uttarakhand. The exotic flora this wildlife sanctuary houses is worth a visit if time allows.
Sikolta Altitude: 9,514 ft. (2,900 m)
Altitude Gain: 3,114 ft (949 m)
Travel Distance: 7 km
Travel Hours: 6 hrs (approx.)
Today, you begin your actual trek. From Sankri’s quiet charm, the trail slowly takes you deeper into the forests. The path is dotted with oaks and pines that seem to grow taller with every step you take. Birds chirp above you, and the sound of your breath becomes a steady rhythm. If you listen closely, you can hear the quiet heartbeat of the forest.
The trail rises gently, and although you gain over 3,000 feet, the gradual climb makes it feel comforting. Wildflowers pop up near your feet, and patches of sunlight filter through the leaves. Along the way, a few open clearings give you your first peek into the vastness that lies ahead.
When you reach Sikolta, you’ll find a clearing surrounded by thick trees. It’s a hidden spot, protected from the winds, and perfect for a quiet night. You might even spot animal tracks near the campsite—this is part of the Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary after all.
By nightfall, you’ll realize that this day was not just a physical walk uphill. It was your first true step away from the world below, and into something much more peaceful and still.8
Bhoj Gadi Altitude: 11,160 ft (3,402 m)
Altitude Gain: 1,646 ft (502 m)
Travel Distance: 4.5 km
Travel Hours: 5 hrs (approx.)
From Sikolta, the day begins with the rustle of dry leaves and the fresh scent of morning dew. The trail now feels more alpine. Fewer trees, more open skies, and sharper air. The climb today is shorter in distance but more direct. As you gain altitude, it becomes clearer that you’re entering high terrain.
The forests thin out and slowly, wide meadows take over. You might see wild horses grazing or distant mountains revealing themselves in patches. There are no shops, no people, just space and silence. The feeling of walking through this landscape is humbling. You’re not conquering nature; you’re quietly passing through it.
Bhoj Gadi, your next campsite, sits near a sloping grassland framed by hills. The wind here is crisper, and the stars at night feel within reach. Bhoj trees, from which this site gets its name, are scattered around like ancient guardians of the trail.
Even with the effort it takes to get here, your mind remains surprisingly calm. The terrain demands focus, but the view offers serenity. Tonight, you rest with a clear view of tomorrow’s path, the ridge that awaits you. And it looks every bit as grand as you imagined.
Phulara Ridge Altitude: 12,250 ft (3,734 m)
Pushtara Altitude: 9,600 ft (2,926 m)
Altitude Gain: 1,090 ft (332 m)
Altitude Loss: 2,650 ft (808 m)
Travel Distance: 8.5 km
Travel Hours: 6-7 hrs (approx.)
This is the highlight of your trek, the day you walk the famous ridge. After breakfast at Bhoj Gadi, the trail climbs steadily. The higher you go, the stronger the wind, but also the clearer the view. You reach Phulara Ridge without realizing it. Suddenly, you are walking on a narrow path with valleys falling on both sides. And in front of you? A 250-degree view of snow-capped peaks.
Every step on the ridge feels like a privilege. It’s not just a walk, it’s a float. The mountains stretch beyond what the eye can catch. Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag all become part of your horizon. You walk the ridge for nearly 4 kilometers. It’s rare to be on a ridge that long and that gentle.
After the ridge, the trail descends into the Pushtara meadows. Wide, soft, and quiet, these grasslands are perfect for resting tired feet. Marmots often peek out from burrows nearby, and sheep graze at a distance.
Tonight’s camp is in one of the quietest places you’ll experience. You’ll lie down in your tent with the memory of the ridge walk still vivid in your mind. It’s the kind of day you will always carry with you.
Taluka Altitude: 6,910 ft (2,106 m)
Sankri Altitude: 6,400 ft (1960 m)
Altitude Loss: 3,200 ft (975 m)
Travel Distance: 8.2 km (trek) + 12 km (drive) = 20.2 km
Travel Hours: 6 hrs (trek) + 50 mins (drive) = 6 hrs 50 mins (approx.)
You wake up to the stillness of Pushtara’s meadows. The grass is cold with morning dew, and your boots crunch gently as you start walking again. Today’s descent takes you through another side of the forest (quieter, denser, and a bit mysterious). The altitude loss is sharp, so your knees might feel the push, but the path never rushes you. It lets you pause and breathe.
This stretch feels like nature’s wrap-up note. You hear the river again. You cross wooden bridges and old tree roots shaped by decades of trekkers before you. Some turns, surprise you with sun rays hitting mossy rocks just right. Others lead you into sudden clearings where wildflowers grow freely.
By the time you reach Taluka, you feel you’ve walked out of a world. But there’s still more. From Taluka, you hop into a vehicle that gently winds down the last 12 kilometers back to Sankri. The drive is short but sweet. You spot familiar trees, and maybe even the ridge far behind you.
At Sankri, the circle completes itself. The same base that sent you off now welcomes you back. Your body is tired, but your heart? Strangely full and quiet. That is the magic of this day. And this trek.
Dehradun Altitude: 2100 ft (640 m)

Trekking is not only about enjoying the change of scenery but also about being responsible. Our (Trekking Compass) responsibility is to provide you with an opportunity for a safe trek. But, how do we do that? We do that when you fulfill your end of the responsibility and are honest with us. To keep you safe we need to be sure there isn’t any inherent threat to your being.
Treks are at higher altitudes and it becomes difficult, almost impossible to provide you with immediate medical assistance. Therefore, we cannot help you if you don’t help us. Trekking is only one of the things you can do, but there are plenty of other things to do too. Don’t risk your life for the thrill.
To approach a trek with utmost safety, we want you to submit the following documents:
Personal Confirmation Statement (Compulsory for anyone over 18 years)
You are participating in a trek at high altitudes and it comes with its own sets of risks. This Personal Confirmation Statement will make sure that you understand all the risks you're buying into. Trekking Compass wants you to confirm your complete understanding of these risks so that you come prepared for any mental or physical challenges ahead.
This statement is also a declaration from you that, "All the information I have provided, including medical conditions, is true. If found false under any circumstances, I will be held accountable and it has nothing to do with Trekking Compass."
We have the utmost empathy for you and will do our best to help wherever possible, but only after assessing your readiness and safety for the trek. This is how our team will adequately prepare for whatever risks we might face during the journey. Concerning individuals are requested to thoroughly cross-check the requirements and only then sign the document.
Parent/Guardian Approval Statement (Compulsory for anyone below 18 years)
For participants under 18 years of age, the Parent/Guardian Approval Statement is essential to confirm that a legal guardian understands and consents to the participation in the trek. Once we have this document, we are affirmed that the parent or guardian is fully aware of the risks involved in trekking at high altitudes and is consenting to their child's participation.
No underage (below 18+) children are welcome on the trek without their parent's consent. Submission of this document reassures us that parents are approving that their child meets the health and fitness requirements for the trek, after a thorough examination.
This legal confirmation holds the parent liable for any discrepancies, freeing Trekking Compass from any liabilities for the same. Parents are requested to thoroughly cross-check the requirements and only then sign the document.
Medical Liability Waiver
The Medical Liability Waiver makes sure participants acknowledge the health risks associated with trekking at high altitudes. Common ailments during treks include altitude sickness, dehydration, muscle cramps, hypothermia, and fatigue, all of which can significantly affect your trekking experience. Additionally, weather changes and the physical demands of the terrain may exacerbate pre-existing conditions.
If you have pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart issues, it’s vital to inform us and carry your necessary medications. Trekking Compass cannot provide immediate medical assistance in remote areas, so having the essential medications, such as inhalers, insulin, or any other prescriptions, is crucial for your safety during the trek.
By signing this waiver, you confirm that you are in good health and have taken the necessary precautions. You acknowledge these risks and agree not to hold Trekking Compass liable for any medical issues or accidents that may arise during the trek.

The Phulara Ridge Trek is best experienced during May–June and September–October. In the summer months, the meadows come alive with wildflowers, oak forests are lush green, and the ridge feels like a carpet of grass against blue skies. In post-monsoon autumn, trekkers enjoy crisp air, stable weather, and sharp mountain views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kala Nag. Winter is not advisable as the ridge gets snowbound.
Unlike most Himalayan treks that take you to a summit or a pass, Phulara is a true ridge walk. Trekkers walk for hours along an open ridge at high altitude, with 360° uninterrupted views of the Garhwal Himalayas. This sense of openness, walking above valleys on both sides, is rare and sets Phulara apart.
It is graded easy to moderate, making it accessible to beginners while still offering adventure. The ascents are gradual, trails are well-defined, and the highest point is not too extreme, which reduces altitude risks compared to other treks.
The trek covers around 29 km in total and usually takes 5–6 days. Each trekking day involves 4–6 hours of walking, passing through forests, alpine meadows, and finally the ridge itself.
The ridge itself lies at an altitude of 3,700 m (12,250 ft). This is high enough for expansive mountain views yet low enough to be comfortable for most trekkers.
No. Phulara Ridge is an ideal beginner-friendly Himalayan trek. However, being physically active and having some pre-trek preparation ensures a more enjoyable experience.
Trekkers should be able to walk 6–8 km on hilly terrain daily. A basic routine of jogging, brisk walking, or stair climbing before the trek is sufficient for preparation.
Accommodation includes guesthouses or homestays in Sankri (the base village) and camping in tents during the trek. Campsites are scenic, often located in meadows or near forests.
Permits for entering the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park are required. Your Phulara Ridge Trek package with Trekking Compass includes all required paperwork, so you don’t need to worry about arranging them separately.
Yes, it is considered one of the safest Himalayan treks. There are no risky river crossings, glacier traverses, or sharp technical sections. Still, weather can change quickly in the mountains, so trekking with experienced guides is advised.
The trek begins from Sankri village, located about 200 km from Dehradun. It takes 8–9 hours by road via Mussoorie and Purola. Shared jeeps and taxis are available.
Yes. The trek is suitable for beginners and even families. Generally, participants between 8–60 years can join, provided they are medically fit and prepared for 6–7 days of trekking in the mountains.
And there are different rules for different sets of children. They are:
For both sets, Medical and Disclaimer forms are compulsory on the trek.
ATMs: The last ATM is in Purola, 30 km before Sankri.
Electricity: Available in Sankri, but no electricity during the trek.
Network: Only BSNL works partially in Sankri; there is no network connectivity on the trail.
Phulara Ridge has gained popularity because it is a rare Himalayan ridge trek that gives a sense of walking on top of the world. It combines forests, meadows, and ridge walking into one compact, safe, and rewarding trek, making it a hidden gem of the Garhwal Himalayas.
Our trek leaders are trained in first aid and equipped with oxygen cylinders and stretchers. The nearest medical facilities are available at Sankri, and evacuation arrangements are made if required. Travel insurance covering trekking is strongly advised.
Yes, trekkers who don’t wish to carry their backpack can opt for mule/porter services at an extra cost. This allows you to trek light while still enjoying the Phulara Ridge Trek experience.
