The Kedarnath with Tungnath Yatra is a combined pilgrimage that connects two of Uttarakhand’s most sacred Shiva temples — Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 m (12,073 ft). This unique journey blends spirituality with the thrill of Himalayan trekking. Kedarnath, set deep in the Garhwal Himalayas beside the Mandakini River, symbolizes strength, devotion, and endurance, while Tungnath, located in the Chopta Valley, represents peace, purity, and closeness to nature. Together, they offer devotees and trekkers a profound experience that transcends mere pilgrimage — a path of discovery through devotion, breathtaking landscapes, and Himalayan silence.
The Yatra is best done between May and October, when both shrines are open.
May–June: Ideal weather, snow-capped peaks, and blooming meadows
July–August: Monsoon season; heavy rain and landslides can disrupt travel.
September–October: Clear skies, fewer crowds, and golden post-monsoon landscapes — perfect for trekking. Both temples close by mid-November for winter. The Tungnath idol is moved to Makkumath, while Lord Kedarnath’s idol shifts to Ukhimath for worship.
The full Yatra usually takes 5 days, starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh.
A typical itinerary looks like this:
Day 1: Haridwar - Sitapur
Day 2: Sitapur - Kedarnath
Day 3: Kedarnath - Sitapur
Day 4: Sitapur - Tungnath - Chopta
Day 5: Chopta - Haridwar
For those taking it slowly, an additional rest day in Chopta helps acclimatization and allows time to explore the serene meadows.
We’ll handle your complete travel arrangements throughout the Yatra.
The journey begins from Haridwar or Rishikesh, both well connected by road and rail.
Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (about 35 km from Rishikesh).
Nearest Railway Station: Haridwar Junction.
From Rishikesh, you’ll travel by road to Sitapur via Rudraprayag on the first day (approximately 8 hours). From Sitapur, the next leg continues towards Kedarnath, which is reached by a 16–18 km trek from Gaurikund or by helicopter service from Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi.
After the Kedarnath Darshan, you’ll return to Sitapur and then proceed towards Chopta, the base point for Tungnath Temple, before concluding the Yatra at Haridwar.
All transfers, permits, and on-ground coordination are included in your package for a smooth and worry-free journey.
The Kedarnath trek from Gaurikund follows the Mandakini River through mountain villages and forested paths.
Distance: ~16 km (one way)
Time: 6–8 hours
Terrain: Stone-paved trail with gradual to steep climbs
Rest stops: Jungle Chatti → Bheembali → Linchauli → Kedarnath Base.
For convenience, pony, palki, and Kandi services are available. The rebuilt trail is well-maintained and safe under the management of the Neelkanth Development Authority.
From Chopta (2,680 m), the Tungnath trek is a short but steep climb of 3.5 km through rhododendron forests and open meadows. It takes 1.5–2.5 hours one way. The stone-paved path offers panoramic views of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath Peak. Trekkers often continue another 1.2 km to Chandrashila Peak (4,000 m) for a 360° Himalayan panorama — a spiritually charged yet beginner-friendly adventure.
Kedarnath Temple: 3,583 m (11,755 ft)
Tungnath Temple: 3,680 m (12,073 ft)
Chandrashila Peak: 4,000 m (13,100 ft)
All lie above the tree line, where air is crisp, views are vast, and weather changes rapidly.
According to legend, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for killing their kin. The Lord avoided them, disguising himself as a bull and diving into the earth. His hump appeared at Kedarnath, and his arms emerged at Tungnath. The remaining parts surfaced at Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar — together forming the Panch Kedar.
Visiting Kedarnath and Tungnath thus symbolizes devotion and redemption, the seeker’s journey from penance to enlightenment.

Kedarnath: GMVN camps, rest houses, and government cottages near the temple.
